Alice Springs International Charter Airport Status
Improving capacity at Alice Springs Airport to attract and retain more international air carriers.
The Alice Springs Airport is a modern terminal situated 14 km to the south of the town and offering a range of services and facilities to air travellers.
Japanese Airlines commenced charters to Alice Springs nearly three years ago and has recently expanded its Australian services to provide quarterly charter flights to Alice Springs.
In the past, essential equipment has been brought in for each charter at significant cost. This has affected the profitability of the charters.
Establishing permanent infrastructure would better position the region to take full advantage of opportunities presented by the international charter flight market.
How it will happen
- Providing new essential equipment including aircraft start cart, tug and luggage x-ray equipment.
- Upgrading facilities and security barriers within the airport.
- Promoting the destination as an international air charter destination.

What we have already done
- Funding of $220 000 provided by the Northern Territory Government.
- Japanese Airlines has permanently located a start cart at the airport.
- Funding of $192 000 committed by the Australian Government.
- X-ray equipment ordered.
- NT Airport has commenced the purchase of a tug.
- NT Airport will program works to upgrade amenities and security screens.
- $150 000 spent with Japanese wholesalers to help promote charters.
What will happen next
- On arrival of the tug, installation of x-ray equipment, and the completion of infrastructure upgrades, Alice Springs can be marketed as an international charter destination.
- Work will continue to establish a regular series of international charter flights into Alice Springs.
