Ensuring land is available in Alice Springs to meet the future needs for residential, commercial and industrial development.

Ensuring that land is available to meet the growth needs of Alice Springs is a key element in providing for the future prosperity of the town.

The constraints to land release include topography, flood risk, provision of infrastructure, sacred sites and native title. All of these elements must be addressed in a programmed and cost effective manner if land is to be available ahead of need.

This project will examine the basis for additional land needs and begin the processes required to deal with them.

How it will happen

  • Planning to ensure that unmet demand for land to live on and do business from does not constrain the growth of Alice Springs.
  • Examine the historical demand for land for various purposes.
  • Forecast demand into the future based on likely growth.
  • Develop options for future growth of the town.
  • Identify the constraints and ways to assess their impact.
  • Engage the community in making the best choices for future growth.
  • Provide a prioritised plan for future infrastructure and negotiations.

For residents

  • Ability to purchase and build on land as it becomes available through future land releases.
  • An opportunity to participate in decision making for the future of the town through the community engagement process.

For business

  • Opportunity to invest in business opportunities based on future land releases.
  • Participation in the development industry and associated building work as residential and industrial land is released.

What we have already done

  • Negotiated the release of native title land at Larapinta.
  • Completion of Stirling Heights subdivision by the developers.
  • Building of homes here proceeding with new homes now occupied.
  • Commenced negotiation with native title holders over Mt Johns Valley.

What will happen next

  • Continuing negotiations for the release of native title land at Mt Johns Valley.
  • Construction of the headworks for Stage 1 land release at Mt Johns Valley commencing in 2007.
  • In the longer term, identify areas for future development.
