Overview - Moving Alice Ahead

Making Alice Springs a better place to live, work and raise a family

Moving Alice Ahead is about building a strong, safe and secure future for Alice Springs.

Eleven individual projects are now underway as part of Moving Alice Ahead. They address key economic, social and community issues that are affecting Alice Springs now and into the future. The projects identify opportunities for future development in partnership with local business, industry and the wider community.

The projects are:

Lifestyle – developing strategies and infrastructure that make Alice Springs an even better place to live and work.
Red Centre Way – developing opportunities for economic growth and development along the Red Centre Way.
Standardising Town Camps – redeveloping town camps to become part of urban Alice Springs, improving living conditions and addressing visitor and resident accommodation needs.
Alice Springs International Charter Airport Status – improving the capacity at Alice Springs Airport to attract and retain more international air carriers.
Responsible Alcohol Management Framework – developing strategies to reduce the incidence of alcohol-related harm in Alice Springs.
Regional Service Centre – developing Alice Springs as the preferred centre for sourcing and supplying goods and services to industries in the Central Australian region.
Workforce Development – developing a framework that will see more local people employed in the private and public sector in Central Australia.
Desert Knowledge – developing and supporting strategies and projects that position Alice Springs as a centre for smart and sustainable desert living.
Growing the Indigenous Arts and Cultural Industry – initiating and supporting strategies that place Alice Springs at the forefront of developments in the Indigenous art and culture industry.
Tanami Road Upgrade – developing strategies and partnerships to ensure the continued development of the Tanami Road to meet current and future needs.
Residential and Industrial Land Availability – ensuring land is available in Alice Springs to meet the future needs for residential, commercial and industrial development.

Moving Alice Ahead builds on the successes of Alice in Ten, while concentrating on new concepts critical to the growth of Alice Springs into the future. It builds on the strong partnerships developed between government and community under Alice in Ten, and the feedback obtained from stakeholders and community through this process has informed the development of the projects.

Some of these projects have been recently identified as priorities, while others continue to build on the ongoing work of NT Government agencies, the private sector and the community.

Moving Alice Ahead is about taking action to deal with the key issues and challenges faced by Central Australians and developing local approaches and local solutions.

Its aim is to address key community concerns while ensuring that economic, social and cultural development in the region is supported and energised.
